Reports to

Director of Transportation

Responsibilities

An individual who is optimistic, who sees events positively and anticipates the best possible outcome. Able to encourage and sustain others’ efforts as they work toward goals.

1)    Drive school bus on route assigned by the Director of Transportation in a safe, efficient and timely manner.

2)    Perform the prescribed pre-trip safety checks and ensure that the vehicle’s operating system is working in the normal ranges.

3)    Follow laws and regulations set by NYSED, NYSDOT, NYSDMV, FMCSA and Lyons Central School District Board of Education Policies

4)    Maintain the bus in a clean safe order and report any unusual or unsafe condition to the Head Mechanic/Bus Driver.

5)    Monitor and maintain student behavior to ensure their safety.

6)    Report any significant student discipline problem to the Director of Transportation and document behavioral issue on the school referral system, currently Infinite Campus.

7)    During employment maintain proper license class with necessary endorsements, 19A and DOT certifications and annual refreshers, NYSED biennial PPT, annual physical and random drug testing as required by law.

8)    As a condition of employment driver must register in the FMCSA Clearinghouse

9)    Report to the Director of Transportation, any use of or change in driver's medication, drug use or physical condition that might affect the safe and legal operation of a school bus.

10)  Complete all paperwork as prescribed by the Director of Transportation.

11)  Participate in training activities as recommended by the Director of Transportation.

12)  Establish and maintain up-to-date student ridership lists.

13)  Maintain, on the bus, ridership lists and route maps showing stops and time schedules.

14)  Is familiar with and executes, as needed, prescribed emergency procedures for responding to a bus accident.

15)  Is familiar with and performs first-aid as may be needed.

16)  Works cooperatively with school personnel, students, and the community.

17)  Carries out any other assigned duties and/or responsibilities which may be deemed appropriate by the Superintendent of Schools (or designee) and the Board of Education.

Performs related duties as required or assigned. 

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Director of Transportation in accordance with Board of Education policy.

Terms of Employment

Ten (10) months per year as described in the Agreement between the Superintendent and the School Bus Drivers Association.

Responsibilities

1)    Aids the driver with prescribed safety checks and ensures that all on board equipment necessary for the transportation of students is present and in good working condition.

2)    Assists the driver in maintaining a clean and organized bus cabin and reports any defects to the driver.

3)    Maintains student behavior and anticipates student’s needs to ensure their safety while on the bus and follows IEP directives where applicable.

4)    Reports significant student discipline issues to the Director of Transportation and document events on the school referral reporting system, currently Infinite Campus.

5)    Observe all safety regulations and standards as described in the employee handbook and NYSED Laws and Regs booklet.

6)    Reports to the driver any unfamiliar noise, odor or other condition that develops on the bus.

7)    Reports to the Director of Transportation, any use of or change in medication, drug use or physical condition that might affect the safe performance of duties while on the bus.

8)    Attends and participates in required annual training and testing to maintain required certifications necessary to perform bus monitor duties. s familiar with and executes, as needed, prescribed emergency and evacuation procedures for responding to a bus accident.

10)  Is familiar with and performs first aid as may be needed.

11)  Works cooperatively with school personnel, students and the community.

12)  Carries out any other assigned duties and/or responsibilities which may be deemed appropriate by the Superintendent of Schools (or designee) and the Board of Education.

13)  Maintains a working knowledge of car seats, safety vests and harnesses, wheelchairs and proper securement of wheelchairs, hydraulic and mechanical wheelchair lifts
