Qualifications

  • Education - A college degree and New York State Education Department Teaching Certificate preferable. 
  • Minimum Requirement - Must qualify for teacher assistant license under the Rules of the Commissioner of Education. 
  • Experience - Working with children in some instructional capacity preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

 

Good knowledge of and understanding of child growth and development; good knowledge of paraprofessional instructional procedures and practices; some knowledge of the instructional goals and policies of public schools; good knowledge of subject matter reinforcement practices of the classes to which assigned; ability to implement teachers' instructional plans in assigned field; considerable patience and ability to work effectively with children, young adults, and faculty members; ability to assist in the implementation of an instructional program and to participate in monitoring and ensuring appropriate student behavior; ability to follow written and oral instructions and to perform all required tasks; ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities  Assists teachers in the process of providing instruction. 

  • An individual who is optimistic, who sees events positively and anticipates the best possible outcome.
  • Able to encourage and sustain others’ efforts as they work toward goals.
  • Provides instructional services to individual or small groups of students under the direct general supervision of appropriate teacher and/or administrative personnel. 
  • Assists the teacher in the development and preparation of instructional materials. 
  • Maintains appropriate records of students under the direction of appropriate teacher and/or administrative personnel. 
  • Assists teachers in related instructional work as required. 
  • Assists students in the use of available instructional resources. 
  • Utilizes own special skills and abilities by assisting in instructional programs. 
  • Supervises students when they are outside the classroom and maintain order. 
  • Performs miscellaneous clerical duties.

Other

Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Evaluation

Performance of the job will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal in accordance with Board of Education policy.

Responsibilities

  • An individual who is optimistic, who sees events positively and anticipates the best possible outcome.
  • Able to encourage and sustain others’ efforts as they work toward goals.
  • Sweeps and mops floors and stairs.
  • Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture, and other equipment.
  • Washes windows, walls, chalk boards, sinks, and other fixtures.
  • Polishes furniture and other metal furnishings.
  • Empties wastebaskets, collects and disposes of rubbish.
  • Reports unsafe or unusual conditions to the supervisor.
  • Clears snow and ice from walks and driveways.
  • Mows lawns, trims shrubs, rakes leaves, weeds lawn areas and performs similar duties as assigned.
  • Assists in operation of heating plant operation.
  • Delivers packages and messages.
  • Places and removes traffic signs.
  • Arrange chairs and furniture as directed.
  • Makes minor repairs to facilities and/or equipment as needed.
  • Paints rooms and equipment as needed.
  • Assists in minor plumbing, carpentry, or electrical work.
  • Works cooperatively with school personnel, students, and the community.
  • Carries out any other assigned duties and/or responsibilities which may be deemed appropriate by the Superintendent of Schools (or designee) and the Board of Education.

As needed. Twelve (12) months per year according to the terms established by the Agreement between the Superintendent and the Support Staff Association.

Responsibilities

  • Able to encourage and sustain others’ efforts as they work toward goals.
  • Cleans, sweeps, mops, washes walls, dusts, cleans and polishes furniture and windows, woodwork, railings, window coverings, stairs, hallways and restrooms.
  • Empties waste baskets, pencil sharpeners, etc. and disposes of rubbish.
  • Cleans and washes lavatory fixtures, mirrors, chalk boards and chalk trays.
  • Replaces light bulbs, dispensers, etc. Fills dispensers with soap, disposable paper products, etc.
  • Vacuums and cleans carpets and furniture; straightens office, classroom and cafeteria furniture.
  • Secures and locks windows and doors.
  • Turns off lights and small appliances.
  • Provides continuous awareness of all safety precautions, procedures, etc. and reports problems/deficiencies.
  • Gives assistance as necessary to educational personnel.
  • Performs duties as may be assigned by the Head Custodian (or designee).
  • Participates in minor grounds activities including, but not limited to, mowing, weeding, painting, and snow removal.

Job Goal

The cleaner is responsible for performing all of the routine cleaning duties in the school buildings as directed by the Head Custodian (or designee).

 

Evaluation

Performance of the job will be evaluated annually by the Head Custodian in accordance with Board of Education policy.
