A Student and Family Support Specialist is a vital member of the school community, dedicated to improving student success by bridging the gap between school, home, and community resources. This role focuses on identifying and removing barriers to academic achievement, including behavioral challenges, attendance concerns, and social-emotional needs. The Specialist works collaboratively with staff, families, and community agencies to ensure students receive comprehensive, coordinated support.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Case Management & Intervention: Identifying at-risk students and coordinating personalized support plans. This often includes providing Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions for students with intensive needs. 

  • Home-School Liaison: Conducting home visits to assess student welfare and help families implement strategies that support learning at home. 

  • Resource Navigation: Connecting families with essential community services, such as mental health counseling, public assistance, or housing support. 

  • Collaborative Support: Working closely with teachers, administrators, and community partners to foster an inclusive school environment and ensure consistent implementation of behavioral support plans. 

  • Parent Education: Leading workshops or support groups on topics like child development, parenting skills, and navigating the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. 

Key Requirements & Skills 

 

 

  • Education: High School Diploma. Preferred educational background and/or experience in social work, psychology, or education.  

  • Certifications: Required state-mandated trainings  

  • Soft Skills: High levels of empathy, cultural competence, and strong verbal communication are vital for building trust with diverse populations. 

Reports to 

Building Administrators and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction 

Other 

Performs related duties as required or assigned. 

Evaluation 

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal, the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, and other administrators as designated by the Superintendent, in accordance with the terms established by the Agreement.
