Job Goal:

The Elementary School Principal is the Chief Administrative Officer of the Elementary School. This person is the intermediary officer between the Superintendent and the teaching staff, non-teaching personnel, students, and parents in his/her school. The Principal shall serve as the educational leader of the school and be responsible for supervision, curriculum development and the improvement of instruction. In this position, the Principal is the educational leader for the total educational program in his/her building. The Building Principal is appointed by the Board of Education. The administration and supervision of the school shall be in keeping with policies laid down by the Board of Education and general procedures and practice specified by the Central Administration Office. 

 

Responsibilities

 

Instructional Program and Curriculum Development 

Develop an overall program consistent with State Law, Commissioner's Regulations, Board Policy, and Administrative Regulations. 

  1. Provides instructional leadership, maintains, and improves the educational program and develops unique aspects of the total program through such things as: 
    1. Classroom visitations, conferences, and meetings with staff.
    2. Teaching demonstration lessons or arranging for visitation of master teachers. 
    3. Establishing a climate of openness for considering new ideas. 
    4. Encouraging teachers to continue their professional growth. 
    5. Providing positive recognition for quality work. 
  2. Evaluates overall building curriculum considering such things as standardized teacher input test results and community reactions. 
  3. Consults with and coordinates the services of resource personnel, so that all classroom teachers and students may receive effective assistance.
  4. Communicates with the Central Office and Board of Education concerning building curriculum and other building issues not covered by Board policy or regulations. 
  5. Coordinates program development with budget availability. 
  6. Orients and assists new staff members. 
  7. Coordinates the process of assigning students to teachers. 
  8. Assists staff members with the development of a daily class teaching schedule. 
  9. Organizes, coordinates and schedules school assemblies. 
  10. Monitors the report card system. 
  11. Supervises the administration of State assessments and standardized tests. 
  12. Coordinates Federal Aid programs assigned to the building

 

Business and Budget Management 

  1. Assists in the development of the annual District budget. 
  2. Administers the school's budgeted allocations. 
  3. Maintains a continuous record of school budget accounts in conjunction with the Business Office.
  4. Conducts an annual inventory of supplies, books, and equipment. 

 

Student Behavior, Services and Activities 

Coordinates the services of teachers, counselors, deans, psychologists, social workers, and others in carrying out effectively preventative and remedial measures in coping with serious behavior problems. 

  1. Communicates with parents of children having serious behavior problems about the working effectively with the child. 
  2. Communicates with the Middle School Principal concerning preventative and remedial measures used in coping with serious behavior problems of students currently assigned to fifth grade. 
  3. Ensures that proper records are maintained on all students. 
  4. Administers the school health services program: 
  1. Immunizations 
  2. Communicable Diseases 
  3. Medication 
  1. Organizes and supervises student attendance policies and procedures. 
  2. Assists the transportation supervisor and/or parents in the solution of building-related transportation problems. 

 

Community Relationships 

 

  1. Works cooperatively with Parent-Teacher organizations. 
  2. Effectively communicates the school's programs to the community. 

 

Personnel 

 

  1. Recruits, selects, evaluates, and supervises building professional staff members. 
  2. Develops and administers sound personnel policies which lead to a collaborative team effort. 
  3. Selects, supervises, and evaluates building clerical staff. 
  4. Coordinates the supervision and evaluation of building teacher aides. 
  5. Oversees volunteer program. 

 

Organization, Supervision and Coordination of Building Facilities and Equipment 

 

  1. Supervises and works with the head custodian and cleaning staff on care and maintenance of the building. 
  2. Coordinates the in-school calendar of activities with the needs of the non-school groups for use of the building. 
  3. Plans and organizes programs of student and staff safety through such means as meetings and procedures for fire, air raid, and bus transportation drills. 
  4. Maintains a system of records regarding the use of the building facilities and equipment. 
  5. Maintains an inventory of building equipment. 
  6. Arrange for and conducts building fire inspection and playground safety inspection. 

 

Miscellaneous 

 

  1. Participates actively in Administrative Staff meetings. 
  2. Assists in the planning and organization for the opening of school in September. 
  3. Assists in the organization and supervision of year-end activities. 
  4. Prepares such reports as may be required. 
  5. Administers the building consistent with the provisions of the teachers' and CSEA contracts. 
  6. Coordinates with the Director of Special Programs and the Director of Intervention in the selection of students and staff for summer programming. 

 

Other

Performs related duties as required or assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

 

 

Evaluation:

Performance of the job will be evaluated annually by the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction in accordance with Board of Education policy.
