Qualifications

Minimal

  • Shall hold or be eligible for a New York State initial or professional certificate in the area of School Counselor.

Desired

  • Displays the experience, ability, personality, energy, and maturity necessary to work effectively with assigned students.
  • Possesses the flexibility to meet the everyday demands of students, curriculum, department, school and system.

Building Principal

Responsibilities

  1. An individual who is optimistic, who sees events positively and anticipates the best possible outcome.
  2. Able to encourage and sustain others’ efforts as they work toward goals.
  3. Assists the student in making educational, personal, social and vocational adjustments and decisions.
  4. Assists teachers, administrators, other staff members, and the community in understanding the needs and issues of students.
  5. Provides guidance services to all students.
  6. Serves as a resource in interpreting the school program and how it relates to individual needs of students.
  7. Works cooperatively with other student support personnel specialists: reading interventionists, math interventionists, speech and language pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, psychologists, prevention specialists and social workers.
  8. Prepares and presents student orientation programs and assists with parent orientation programs.
  9. Assists students to understand themselves, as well as others.
  10. Provides vocational and career information to students.
  11. Assesses the emotional, social and academic progress of students on a continuing basis, provides progress reports, and holds appropriate conferences.
  12. Participates in the organization and administration of the Standardized Testing program. Verify this
  13. Collects relevant data and recommends academic/classroom placement.
  14. Determines student eligibility for honor awards.
  15. Recommends the academic placement of students for the ninth grade.
  16. Establishes short- and long-range program goals which are consistent with the Vision and Mission of the District, as embodied in all curricular materials.
  17. Assists in implementing school-wide policies and rules governing student conduct.
  18. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations.
  19. Attends meetings as required (i.e., faculty meetings, parent conferences, CSE meetings).
  20. Serves on established committees, either on a voluntary basis or by assignment.
  21. Submits annual budget requests to the Building Principal.
  22. Remains informed of current trends and research in the area of school counseling

Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Evaluation

Performance of the job will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal in accordance with Board of Education policy
